Host-biofilm interactions during implant infections

Prof. Dr. Martin Aepfelbacher / PD Dr. Ruckdeschel (AG Institut für Medizinische Mikrobiologie, Virologie und Hygiene)

Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm formation significantly contributes to pathogenesis of implant-related infections. Specifically, biofilms render staphylococci less susceptible to host immune effector mechanisms. In order to understand why professional phagocytes fail to eliminate biofilm forming bacteria we investigate the intracellular signalling and activation events after contact of phagocytes with staphylococcal biofilms.
